The European Union (EU) is an economic and political union of 28 member states located primarily in Europe.
The EU was created in the aftermath of the Second World War (then named the European Economic Community). Its main aim was to foster economic cooperation: the idea being that countries who trade with each other become economically interdependent ans so more likely to avoid conflict.
