The European Union (EU) is an economic and political union of 28 member states located primarily in Europe.
The EU was created in the aftermath of the Second World War (then named the European Economic Community). Its main aim was to foster economic cooperation: the idea being that countries who trade with each other become economically interdependent ans so more likely to avoid conflict.

The EU later evolved into an organization overlooking wider policy areas. Policies established by the EU are founded on treaties, voluntarily and democratically agreed by all member countries.
The EU has aided the creation of a single or "internal" market within Europe enabling goods, services, money and people to move freely. The abolition of border controls between EU countries and the creation of a single European currency (the Euro) are factoring examples or EU's operations.
